I've never written a blog before.
I've never even been very good with posting fleshed out reviews on Goodreads. Mostly though, that's because I don't think a 1 - 5 star scale is nuanced enough for my reading habits. There are so many important ingredients that make a fun or exciting or poignant read, that 5 stars never feels like an accurate recommendation.
But hey, I'm getting ahead of myself. I completely forgot to introduce myself...
Who am I?
Let's start with the basics:
My name is Adele, I'm currently 32 and I'm from the UK. I'm married with two fur babies, and am self confessed snowflake with a bleeding heart and chronic health conditions. Huge Oxford comma fan.
Oh yeah, and I read. A lot.
Why The BookCat?
I've been an avid bookworm ever since I discovered the Asterix and Obelix comics as a kid. I never dropped off when it came to bookishness, I'm pretty sure I'd cease to exist without the written word.
These days, I read more than ever. As a Spoonie, I'm no longer able to do a lot of the things that I used to, so I spend that time reading. Over the years I've developed so many ideas around reviews and the cultures/attitudes surrounding the books I love, that now I want to share them. Even if I'm typing into the void, why not?
The cat part? Well, my cats are honestly my besties. They're my two mischievous shadows who follow me almost everywhere, even during toilet time; seriously, I've peed with a cat on my shoulder or head more times than I'd care to recall. They make me happy, and books make me happy - so it made sense to blend two of my favourite things and hope that other people enjoyed hearing about my opinions and the escapades of my two boys.
What can you expect?
On this page, you can expect to read honest and fair reviews for all sorts of Fantasy subgenres. I'll endeavour to review completed series where possible, and even if it wasn't my cup of tea, I'll explain why and I really won't disparage the author or fans within the review. We don't all have the same tastes and, personally, I prefer it that way.
I'll also be writing DEL-iberations (ha, get it? My name's Adele. It's hilarious). These will be opinion pieces regarding the Fantasy genre and how it's perceived as a whole. Things like gender, politics, sexuality etc are all topics I'd like to discuss. Personally, I think Fantasy writings are a really interesting way to look into our society's collective consciousness - the abnormal and wonderful lends authors a freedom that I don't think other genres really do.
And just because I'm a crazy cat lady I'll post some fun stories about Rupert and Cas, which will hopefully make people smile. We all need as many smiles a day as we can find, so I do hope my boys will make you giggle.
Well, this has gone on far too long.
I promise the rest of my posts will be far more interesting than this, and far less ramble-y.
Bye for now...
I'll figure out a cool sign off.
